Two days later and I am still waiting for a call from tier 2 in Switzerland. After hours on the phone, they admit my issue is with the Camera Companion software and they escalated it. They do not understand network shares and security. I will admit that I did not read the manual on setting up the network storage, but it works and has worked for a few years.

I logged a ticket with AXIS support and they were almost worthless.

I checked the recordings on the video camera web interface and on the network storage and it shows normal recordings activated by the motion detection. In Camera Companion, I can view the live view, but the recordings show a "camera error" and shows the camera is constantly recording. I moved the camera to its destination and issues started. I had the new camera in my office for a few days while I configured it and everything worked fine in Camera Companion, even the motion detection. Everything has worked fine until I added a new camera. I really do not want to be forced into adding another server in the mix as this is what attracted me to the web server in camera solution.I have been using AXIS Camera Companion for a few years to monitor 3 cameras. My problem sounds similar but persists with H.264 and no audio. I see in the 5.4 firmware known bugs that 'Local recording playback fails when using Motion JPEG + audio with resolution 2048x1536 and higher'. If I use Axis Camera Station Client then recordings and playback are perfect. There is no problem at 1920 by 1080 but the problem persists in H.264 at max resolution.

The MKV files play perfectly externally, as do they if I play from the camera's event log so it is just a playback issue. Live view all works but first one then a second camera now gives 'camera error' on playback from within Camera Companion. I am testing the cameras prior to installation and have the cameras all set to MJPEG at 20fps and native resolution of 2048 by 1536 with audio switched off. I have a dedicated subnet with a Synology DS1512 with 5 3TB discs as RAID 5.

I have just bought 5 Axis P3346 VE cameras for home security.
